YOUTH CHOIRS

TheChildren's Choir was established at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in 1984. The program's objective is to teach children the language of music and artistic expression within a Catholic Christian faith context. The choirs are actively involved with the spiritual and liturgical life of the Church and sing at one liturgy a month. In addition, the choirs often travel to perform at the Cathedral in Richmond, participate in our Lessons and Carols in December and perform a spring musical cantata in May. There are currently 2 choirs that both rehearse on Tuesdays: The K-1st grades Music Builders Choir (5:30-6:00PM) and The 2-6th grades Youth Choir (6:00-7:00PM).
ADULT CHOIRSAdult Choir

The adult choir provides music at the 9:30 a.m. Sunday Liturgy and uses a combination of various instruments and styles of music with a heavier concentration on classic choral literature. Rehearsals are on Wednesday from 7:00-8:30 PM. This choir joins with the 11:30 choir to travel to Richmond in the spring to sing at the Cathedral and also participates in our December Lessons and Carols.
CantorThe cantor is a leader of sung prayer stemming from the Jewish tradition of a cantor intoning the psalm. The cantor leads the Responsorial psalm during the Liturgy of the Word and assists with song leading when a music ensemble is not present. Rehearsal times are set with the music director who will assist in vocal development and training. Prior musical experience is crucial.
Handbell Choir
Comprised of adults and high school students who have had some music training, or are a quick study. This Choir performs at one Liturgy each month and other festival Liturgies and also participates in our December Lessons and Carols. Rehearsals are Thursdays from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m.
Instrumental Ensemble Music
If you are an instrumentalist of any sort, you are invited to use your gifts at any of the various Liturgies. We have guitarists, flautists, and other musicians at many of our liturgies. Instrumentalists usual prepare for Liturgies at home and arrive early to coordinate with the accompanist and the cantor. New accompanists on the piano or organ are always needed. Consider sharing your gifts with your parish community.
The 5:00 Contemporary Ensemble
This group rehearses from 3:30-4:30 p.m. on Sundays and plays at the Sunday evening liturgies. The 5:00 Ensemble uses both vocalists and instrumentalists, both teens and adults, to praise God using more contemporary styles.
