How to get kids to fall in love with Christ when school is over?
This is a question that I ask myself regularly as a mother but also working with families and children. The answer is not always a clear or easy one. But what I do know is that getting children to know that Jesus loves them through their friends, family and church community is a great start. Vacation Bible school is a wonderful opportunity for kids to have fun getting to know their best friend: Jesus. By having them interact with friends of different ages, they get to collaborate, look up to the “older ones”, and be compassionate and caring for the “little ones” in their group. Our children learn about bible verses and stories in the Bible adventures station, they think deeper about Catholic Social Teaching.
But love is also fun, right? These boys and girls will have the amazing opportunity to praise the Lord and be loud, they will be praying, playing, laughing and then they will realize that God’s love has been around them and within them the whole week. One of the most striking things for me is getting to see the adults that come and are transformed for a week as they radiate Christ’s joy every time they are running a station. I love seeing teenagers that are willing to sacrifice their summer sleeping-in schedule to volunteer for VBS. At first, they might come in yawning but throughout the week they become vibrant young leaders; not only do they have a renewed awakening of their Catholic faith, but they are opening their hearts to Jesus by caring for His children. Let this be your summer where your children (and yes, even your teenagers!) will come home talking about Jesus; let them reignite your faith by asking them how their day at VBS was, and who knows, maybe they will be bringing Jesus to their school when the summer ends.
