Social Ministry/Outreach

Our Lady of Mount Carmel’s Social Ministry directly responds to the call of Jesus to feed the hungry, give shelter to the homeless, care for the orphan and widow in their distress, and to assist the poor and vulnerable right here in our own Newport News community.

Pantry Sorters

This ministry is a good fit for families looking to be involved in ministry together.
The Pantry Sorter ministry involves:

  • Volunteering once a week on an 8 week rotation

  • Approximately 208 hours of service per year

  • Moving food donations from the Commons to the Food Pantry

  • Sorting and organizing the food onto the pantry shelves

Coordinator: Margaret Goggins.  Please email Margaret Goggins.

Outreach Office

This ministry is a good fit for those with daytime availability.  Ministry needs are Monday, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 12-2pm and Tuesday and Friday from 9-11am – you can help on the day(s) that works best for you.  Some volunteers work once a week, some once a month, and many work somewhere in between the two.

Parishioners can volunteer to help in many ways:

  • Answering Phones

  • Interviewing Clients/Preparing Food Bags

  • Calling Clients Back

You can help as little or as much as you want. Please email Tina Wandersee if you are interested.

Pharmacy Outreach

Parishioners can volunteer to help in many ways:

  • Returning Phone Calls

  • Completing Intake Form for Medication

  • Sending Out Referral Information to Clients

  • Entering Information into Computer

Right now we return calls only on Wednesday mornings, but after training, you can work any day that fits your schedule. Please email Tina Wandersee if you are interested in checking us out or receiving more information.

Pregnancy Outreach

This ministry is best staffed with women.  We have opportunities for daytime or evening hours.  This is a ministry of celebrating life.

Parishioners can volunteer to help in many ways:

  • Assist in sorting and putting away baby clothes when seasons

  • Assist during appointments

  • Help with answering the HelpLine

Please email Tina Wandersee if you are interested in checking us out or receiving more information.

Opportunities with One-Time Events

These are ways you can serve without the commitment of a long term project – consider it a one and done.  As these events come up specific need and contact information will be available in the bulletin.  Serving in this way is equally as important as a long term commitment.

Volunteer with 3e or Refugee Ministry

The mission of 3e Ministry is to encourage, equip and empower faith communities to help transition neighbors living through homelessness from social displacement and those refugees relocated to our area to holistic sufficiency through gracious hospitality and systemic change one friend at a time.

The needs of this ministry will vary in time, talents and resources, as well as direct engagement or distant support. As a parish we will walk with one family or individual at a time, who has recently been housed by LINK of Hampton Roads and/or CCC Refugee and Immigration Office and help them move toward self-sustainability by Encouraging, Equipping and Empowering (those are the “3e”s).

Please email Tina Wandersee if you are interested in checking us out or receiving more information.
